EVERY year when the Air Festival comes around it's a time for reflection for Allan Tofield of Richmond Home Improvement Co.
Allan said "When the Sea Vixen takes to the skies I become nostalgic as I remember how my grandfather used to share stories of when he worked on these particular aircraft. He was an Engineer at De Havilland's factory in Christchurch, now known as Airfield Way in Christchurch. My father and maternal grandfather also worked at the factory too."
The De Havilland Sea Vixen (formerly DH110) was a British twin-engine, twin boom-tailed, two-seat jet fighter flown by the Royal Navy's Fleet Air Arm during the 1950s - 1970s. The Sea Vixen was designed by De Havilland Aircraft Company during the late 1940s and had the distinction of being the first British two-seat combat aircraft to achieve supersonic speed.
Sadly, in 1972, the Sea Vixen was phased out of service with the Royal Navy and only one remains airworthy today, which is seen each year at Bournemouth's Air Festival.
"Grandad served in both World Wars, with the Royal Flying Corps in Italy up to 1918 and can be seen in the photo with Comrades around an Aircraft. He then joined The Army during World War II, serving both in India and the War Office in London, to be de-mob'd in 1946 as a Major (acting Colonel). Naturally, I am very proud of his achievements and his contribution to our Country!" adds Allan.
